Summative Examination in HS260

N.B.:  Follow the instruction for the Summative Exam in HS200 (Methods of Research in History) for this test.

Questions:

1.  Discuss the role of the Catholic Church in the conquest of the Philippines by Spain.  Through it, how were the initial towns effectively established?  Why did it become the center of social life during the Spanish regime? (500-550 words; 20 points)

2.  Make a matrix and establish a comparison and contradiction of the roles or responsibilities between the men and the women of the Spanish era and those of the American era in terms of education, political privileges, socio-economic disposition, and cultural achievements.  Give at least three (3) instances in each comparison and contrast of each colonial regime to prove your claim. (unlimited words; 20 points)

3. Identify three (3) least acculturated societies—one from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao respectively—and describe each society through its beliefs, customary laws, traditions, religious practices, habits, diet, clothing, music, arts, language and literature, and technology. (500-550 words; 20 points)

4.  Identify at least two (2) globalizing factors that negatively affect the social and cultural aspects of Philippine life.  Discuss the factors and show that, indeed, they contribute to the immense destruction of Filipino identity. (500-550 words; 20 points)

*To be submitted on October 16, 2009

Nota Bene:

  1. This test shall be accomplished by a group consisting of only four (4) or five (5) members.
  2. It shall consists of ten (10) to fifteen (15) pages, excluding the title page and List or Works Cited.
  3. It shall be computer-written in an 8.5 x 11-inch bond paper, double-spaced, with 1 inch top, bottom and right margins and 1.25 left margin in a standard 12-point font Times New Roman or Arial only.
  4. Proofread the test for grammatical and spelling errors and see to it that punctuations are correctly used.  No erasure is allowed.
  5. Write using Filipino and third person pronouns.
  6. A healthy paragraph consists of three (3) to five (5) sentences only.
  7. For the professor’s reading convenience, italicize words only when needed or when the words or foreign and have no equivalent in Filipino.
  8. Observe proper margins and pagination.  No wide space shall be provided between two (2) parts; the test must be written continuously.
  9. At least three (5) works must be consulted.   The works must be listed using the MLA format in a separate paper at the end of the work.  Further, the sources must be properly cited/acknowledged whenever certain original ideas, pieces of information, analyses and/or theories are adopted.
  10. The research shall be stapled and placed in a properly labeled short brown envelope before it would be finally submitted to the professor on October 15, 2009.

Questions:

1. With the assumption that sources of information are not entirely reliable as far as veracity of content is concerned, you doubted the diary that was given to you by your grandfather.  Nevertheless, by knowing that a diary is a good source of information, you decided to include it in the list of works that you will cite.  How will you establish the veracity of the diary’s content so that you will come up with a dependable research output?  Include some examples to prove your claim. (25 points)

2. Your professor in Colonial Philippines 2 told you to make a thesis on the condition(s) of the Filipinos during the Second World War.  As a good researcher, you know very well that the study will not stand alone, unless it will have a theory that will serve as its backbone.  Compose Herbert Spencer’s “survival of the fittest” (Social Darwinism) as your thesis’ theoretical framework and show its relationship to your study by illustrating related concepts (conceptual framework). (25 points)

3. With the aim of enriching its collection, the National Historical Institute (NHI) has commissioned you to make a research on the local and oral history of your town.  Write a research proposal [which includes the title, background of the study, problem statement, significance, scope and delimitation, hypothesis, assumptions, frameworks, and a review of related literatures and studies] and discuss the procedure through which your study would be carried out. (50 points)

GOOD LUCK!
